Latency
With static bands in Zero Latency mode, JustAnother EQ adds no delay at all. A few features need to see audio ahead, so the plugin adds up what they need and reports the total to your DAW, which compensates automatically. The plugin window doesn’t show the figure, so this page is the reference.
What adds latency
All times are at 44.1 kHz.
| Setup choice | Latency |
|---|---|
| Linear Phase | about 58 ms (Low) to about 755 ms (Maximum); see Processing modes |
| Spectral dynamics and the Transient / Body split (shared) | about 93 ms |
| Pitch Tracking | about 46 ms |
| HQ saturation | about 0.14 ms per saturated band, at most about 0.4 ms |
- Linear Phase counts as soon as the mode is on, even with no bands.
- Spectral dynamics and the Transient / Body split share one stage, so using both costs about 93 ms once, however many bands use them. In Linear Phase at Low, Medium or High Quality, Spectral dynamics add nothing extra, unless a band is also set to Transient or Body, or split listen is on.
- Split listen (listening to a Transient or Body layer through Channel Listen or the headphones in Split Settings) also uses this stage while it runs.
- Pitch Tracking counts while any band has it switched on.
- HQ saturation counts for each band with saturation on while HQ is on, or during an offline bounce with HQ on Render.
Apart from split listen, the latency comes from how the plugin is set up, not from what it’s doing at the moment. A band keeps its latency while it’s bypassed or its dynamics are off, and the plugin’s own Bypass doesn’t change it either. To remove a band’s latency, set its dynamics back to Broadband or its Signal Target back to Normal, switch off its Pitch Tracking or saturation, or remove the band. None of these settings can be automated, so automation never changes the latency.
Examples
| Setup | Latency at 44.1 kHz |
|---|---|
| Zero Latency, static bands only | 0 ms |
| Zero Latency + a Spectral dynamics band + a Transient band | about 93 ms |
| Same, plus a Pitch Tracking band | about 139 ms |
| Linear Phase Medium + a Spectral dynamics band | about 104 ms |
| Linear Phase Medium + a Spectral dynamics band + a Body band | about 197 ms |
| Linear Phase Maximum + a Body band + Pitch Tracking | about 894 ms |
Tracking and live playing
Delay compensation keeps the processed track in time during playback, but it can’t help while you’re recording through the plugin or playing it live: you’ll hear the delay. For tracking, we recommend Zero Latency with no Spectral dynamics, Transient / Body or Pitch Tracking bands, and HQ off. That gives you no latency at all.
